About

The longer version.

I'm Alain Welliver, a software engineer and builder based in West Philadelphia. I just graduated from the University of Pennsylvania with a B.S.E. in Networked and Social Systems Engineering — Penn's computer science degree with a heavier dose of machine learning, probability, and the math of complex systems — with a concentration in machine learning and minors in Mathematics and Engineering Entrepreneurship.

Before Penn I spent a year in Haifa, Israel, at the Bahá'í World Centre, leading a small curatorial team. Since then I've worked on CT scanner data at Penn Medicine, workforce planning software for a commuter rail operator, and incident tooling at Amazon Web Services. The through-line has been the same each time: find the people doing the work, understand what slows them down, and build something that helps.

Work

• 2025 — now Claude Builder Ambassador at Anthropic — grew a technical builder community at Penn from zero to 1,100+ members, and organized a Penn × Anthropic hackathon.
• 2025 — now Teaching Assistant for Machine Learning (CIS 5200) at Penn — weekly recitations for 40+ students, and assignments for 200+.
• Summer 2025 Software Development Engineer Intern at Amazon Web Services — shipped automated ticket triage and root-cause analysis for EC2 operations.
• Summer 2024 Software Engineer Intern at Keolis Commuter Services — built a full-stack demand modeling app for multi-year workforce planning.
• Summer 2023 Research Assistant at Penn Medicine's CT imaging lab — a pipeline over 17+ TB of scanner data; findings presented at ISCT.
• 2021 — 2022 Curatorial Assistant at the Bahá'í World Centre in Haifa — led a team of five in a conservation-standard environment.

What I care about

Service to humanity, and technology that augments human capacity rather than replacing it. How AI systems learn, and how to keep them aligned with humanity's long-term interests. Physical AI in places like transit and education, where software has to meet the real world. Building with people, not just for them.

Outside of work: volunteering in West Philadelphia, running, and making music. At Penn I sang with Counterparts A Cappella.
